Recording Do’s and Don’ts CHECKLIST
– WEAR YOUR HEADPHONES!
– Check your levels
– Make sure you have full battery power
– Make sure it’s recording and not paused (ticker should be going up in time)
– Let the interviewee know not to make sounds that could mess up the recording (ruffling shirt, etc)
– GET ROOM TONE AT THE END! 30-60 seconds if it’s quiet, 60-120 sec if its noisy

Basic Writing for Radio Guidelines
– Use short, declarative sentences. If you see many clauses or commas, you should probably replace them with periods.
– Simple is better. Metaphors and flowery language come off as literary…how would you actually say this to a friend?
– Let what happened in the story reveal itself to your audience the way your protagonist lived it…ask yourself: are you letting there be any mystery? Are you summing it up in the beginning? Could you do something to cause your audience to ask, ooh and what’s going to happen next?
– Are you setting up the central question or driving purpose of your story in the first minute of your story? And how are you driving it forward?

Interview Do’s and Dont’s CHECKLIST
– Do ask your protagonist to introduce themselves, ideally in a full sentence
– Do get their contact info – to ask follow up questions, and to share your piece with them
– Don’t ask yes or no questions
– Do ask for anecdotes and have them take you back to how they felt then…people have a tendency to sum up things as they are now, but we want to know how they felt in that moment, and how they may have changed since then
– Don’t be afraid to ask follow up questions if you don’t understand; ok to play a little dumb to have people explain things simply
– Do pause and allow for space
– Don’t talk over your interviewee, interrupt them or react audibly to what they are saying
